    TAYLORVILLE - An 18-year-old Pana man pleaded not guilty to murder charges Tuesday during a hearing that revealed more details about allegations that he beat a man to death.

    Quinton L. Morrissey Jr. requested a jury trial after a Christian County judge found there was sufficient evidence to try him for the murder of Stephen Presnell, 59, also of Pana.

    Presnell was found dead at his home on Lake Pana on May 30. An autopsy report said he had suffered blunt force trauma, including a skull fracture and lacerated liver.

    During the preliminary hearing, Illinois State Police Investigator Larry Piotrowski testified that the incident took place while Morrissey, Presnell and several others, including a juvenile, were having a party at Presnell's home.

    A woman told others at the party that Presnell had held a gun to her head, demanding the return of marijuana he said was missing, Piotrowski testified. Witnesses told police that Morrissey struck Presnell with what they described as a “knockout blow” and kicked the body, he said.

    The woman later told police she had lied about being threatened with a gun in hopes of getting someone to return the marijuana, Piotrowski said.

    Representing Morrissey, Christian County Public Defender Greg Grigsby raised questions about how many blows the witnesses had seen, given the extent of Prsenell's injuries. Piotrowski testified that the witnesses consistently said Morrissey delivered three or four blows.

    Grigsby also questioned how Presnell's body was found in a bathroom if witnesses said that he was attacked on the deck. Piotrowski did not have an explanation for the body's location.

    Morrissey will next appear in court on Oct. 23. If convicted, he faces 20 to 60 years imprisonment.
