Donald L. Himes, age 76, of Edwards, Missouri passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at his home. He was born on December 15, 1937 in Lafayette, Indiana the son of Lawrence and Mary Belle (Courter) Himes.
He grew up in Lafayette and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1956. Donald served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Corporal from July 1956 until his discharge in July of 1958. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Behler on May 30, 1959, at St. Lawrence Church in Lafayette. Unto this union three sons and one daughter were born. Don and Carolyn would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary at the end of the month.
Donald worked for Rea Magnet Wire in Lafayette for 13½ years, moving to Osage Beach to operate “The Living Room” for five years and then to Edwards where he owned and operated Walker’s Corner for 15½ years before retiring. At Walker’s Corner he was always helping his customers, day or night. He was known as the “tire man” willing and able to go and get someone’s tire, bring it back to the store, fix it and take it back to them.
Donald loved to bowl and was a member of the bowling league in Nemo, Missouri. He earned six 300 rings for a perfect game. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge and was known there as the “singing bartender.”
He is preceded in death by one son, Doug Himes on January 4, 2013 and a sister, Susan Branson.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of the home, two sons, Stephen Himes of Edwards and David Himes, and his wife, Laurie, of Goodyear, Arizona, a daughter, Kelly Gowins, of Springfield, Missouri, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two more on the way.
Funeral Services for Donald L. Himes will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Warsaw. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening at the Reser Funeral Home from 6:00 until 7:30 with a Rosary service to begin at 7:30. Interment and Military Rites will be held in the Shawnee Cemetery. Memorial contributions may made to Benton County Hospice.
